Read more about Bewdley

15 miles north east of Worcester along the Seven Valley is the picturesque town of Bewdley. By the time of William the Conqueror it was part of the manor of Kidderminster and by the late 12th century was in the hands of the Mortimer family. These were prosperous time for beau lieu (French for beautiful place) as it had became known and 1472 King Edward IV incorporated the town as a Borough which allowed the town to have its own Coat of Arms hold Markets and hold its own court sessions. This prosperity was as a result of the towns location on the River Seven and its closeness to the Wyre Forest. Rivers were the main means of communication and the boatmen of Bewdley were kept busy loading an unloading their flatbottomed boats (called trows locally). Exports from Bewdley included timber from the Wyre Forest ironware from the Black Country and pottery from Stoke imports included China Clay from Devon and luxury goods such as wine and tobacco. Bewdley had always been an important crossing point on the river before the first bridge was built in 1447 this was replaced in 1483 and again following flood damage by the present bridge which was constructed by Thomas Telford in 1798.

King Henry VIII built the Palace of Tickenhill for his son Prince Arthur it was also used as a meeting place for the Council of the Marches of Wales. Some fine examples of Timberframed and Georgian houses still stand showing the wealth that the river trade brought to the town River House and Kimberley House by the river the George Hotel and Lower Park House birthplace of Stanley Baldwin who was Prime Minister three times between 1923 and 1937 are just some of Bewdleys architectural gems. Bewdley is also the Headquarters of the Seven Valley Railway the Bewdley Museum in The Shambles Load Street tells the history of Bewdley and the surrounding areas.

John Lyland the great Elizabethan traveller said of Bewdley a man cannot wish to see a better towne. Nothing has changed in the subsequent 400 years.
