Just 3 miles south of Kidderminster StourportonSevern is the third of the Wyre Forest towns. Stourport is the product of the Canal building era of the18th century and was specifically built to meet the needs of the canal age. Prior to the opening of the Staffordshire Worcester Canal there had been two small villages Upper and Lower Mitton at the confluence of the Seven and the Stour (two 16th century houses are still to be found in Mitton Street). The Staffordshire Worcester was built by the great canal builder James Brindley and linked the River Seven with the Trent Mersey Canal opened in 1771 Stourport soon became one of the busiest and biggest interchange ports in the country with all manner of goods being transshipped between the canal barges and the larger river craft for onward passage to the sea. The town expanded rapidly so much so that by the begining of the 19th century the population had risen to over 1300 other industries attracted by the excellent communication offered by the waterways were attracted to Stourport brass and iron foundries tanneries vinegar works carpet making and spinning mills together with warehouses shops and taverns feed the towns growth. The first bridge over the Seven was built in 1775 and the clock tower on the Old Warehouse was erected in 1813 the movement of the clock was made by local man Samual Thorp of Abberley a well known provincial clock maker. The opening of the Birmingham Worcester Canal in the early 19th century and the expansion of the railways brought about a decline of Stourport as a major port and by the 1940s goods traffic on the canal had all but ceased.

Before the days of easier travel brought about by the railways and improved road systems Stourport had always been an attractive summer destination for the workers of the West Midlands attracted by the Rivers and surrounding countryside and forest even during the economic decline of local industry and canal traffic in the latter part of the 19th and in the early 20th century Stourport proved to be a popular destination. The growth in leisure boating both on the river and canal has seen a resurgence of the declining canal basins and a major overhaul and rebuilding of the dock basins due to be compleated in March 2008 has seen the change in Stourport from an inland port to an inland resort. The canal has finally seen off the railway its great nemesis as the towns station closed in 1970 when the line from Hartlebury to Bewdley was closed. The riverside meadows and river front are ideal for walking and fishing pleasure boats cruse both river and canal and with the regeneration work restoring its former Georgian splendour have seen a resurgence in Stourports fortunes.
